About Us

Clean Power Lake County is a community-driven coalition committed to local action to secure environmental, economic, and racial justice. It is supported by several partners, including environmental, faith, and public health organizations.

Our mission

Our mission is to organize within frontline environmental justice communities to shift Lake County to healthy, renewable energy—and to achieve the self-determination of immigrant, low-income, and working-class families.

CPLC is committed to advancing systemic equity: consciously creating, sustaining and supporting social justice as we work to achieve our campaign goals. Therefore, CPLC is committed to building a movement whose leadership reflects its constituency—community leaders of color from Waukegan and other environmental justice communities.

Our vision

Our vision is to build a sustainable community that promotes the healthy development of all Lake County communities, specifically those most vulnerable (immigrant, low-income, and working-class families), by addressing environmental justice, practicing participatory democracy, advancing self-determination, and empowering people of color.

Our goals

  • Secure a retirement date for the coal-fired power plant in Waukegan.
  • Establish a just transition plan for local workers, including retraining for clean energy jobs.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders in productive conversations about the sale and reuse of the lakefront site, including necessary remediation of coal ash ponds on the site.
  • Identify opportunities for energy efficiency and clean energy projects that can create jobs for local residents and tax revenue for Waukegan and Lake County.
  • Develop intergenerational leadership that sustains community self-determination.

Clean Power Lake County isn’t just saying “no” to coal and fossil fuels. It’s saying “yes” to clean energy, sustainable economic and development, and healthy communities.
